Marlow Summary

Marlow is a city located in Stephens County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 4,919 at the 2010 census, an increase of 11.3 percent from 4,427 at the 2000 census. Marlow is located in the Arbuckle Mountains, and is the county seat of Stephens County.

History

Marlow was founded in 1892 by the Marlow brothers, who were ranchers from Texas. The town was named after one of the brothers, William Marlow. The town was incorporated in 1901.
Marlow was a major stop on the Chisholm Trail, and the town was a center of commerce for the surrounding area. The town was also a major stop on the Rock Island Railroad, which ran through the town from 1901 to the late 1970s.

Geography

Marlow is located at 34°37'25" North, 97°50'25" West (34.623750, -97.840278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.

Economy

Marlow's economy is largely based on agriculture and oil production. The town is home to several large oil companies, including Devon Energy, Chesapeake Energy, and Continental Resources. The town is also home to several large agricultural operations, including cattle ranches, poultry farms, and grain elevators.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 4,427 people, 1,717 households, and 1,164 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,053.2 people per square mile (406.7/km2). There were 1,919 housing units at an average density of 454.3 per square mile (175.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 81.2% White, 0.7% African American, 8.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.2% from other races, and 9.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 1,717 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.06.
