Hooker Summary
Hooker is a small town located in the Oklahoma Panhandle, in Texas County, Oklahoma. It is situated on the western edge of the Oklahoma Panhandle, approximately 20 miles east of the Texas border. The town was founded in 1901 and named after the Hooker family, who were among the first settlers in the area.
Geography
Hooker is located at 36°51'25" North, 101°17'45" West (36.857, -101.296). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Hooker's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, as well as a feed mill and a fertilizer plant. The town also has a small manufacturing sector, with a few small businesses producing a variety of products.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 517 housing units at an average density of 727.2 per square mile (281.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 95.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.9% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.5% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
