Hinton Summary
Hinton is a city located in Caddo County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 2,717 at the 2010 census, an increase of 8.3 percent from 2,507 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Caddo County.
History
Hinton was founded in 1901 by the Choctaw, Oklahoma and Gulf Railroad. The town was named after the railroad's president, William Hinton. The post office was established in 1902.
Hinton was incorporated in 1906. The town was a major shipping point for cattle and cotton. The town was also a major stop on the Rock Island Railroad.
Geography
Hinton is located at 35°25'45" North, 98°30'45" West (35.429167, -98.5125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.
Economy
The economy of Hinton is largely based on agriculture and oil production. The town is home to several oil and gas companies, including Apache Corporation, Chesapeake Energy, and Devon Energy.
The town is also home to several manufacturing companies, including Hinton Manufacturing, which produces a variety of products, including automotive parts, industrial equipment, and medical supplies.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,507 people, 1,039 households, and 690 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,133.2 people per square mile (438.2/km2). There were 1,179 housing units at an average density of 531.2 per square mile (205.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 81.2% White, 0.4% African American, 11.7% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.3% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.7% of the population.
There were 1,039 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.96.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $27,917, and the median income for a family was $35,000. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,945.
