Healdton Summary

Healdton is a small town located in Carter County, Oklahoma, United States. It is situated in the foothills of the Arbuckle Mountains, about 20 miles south of Ardmore. The population was 2,093 at the 2010 census, an increase of 8.3 percent from 1,931 at the 2000 census.

History

Healdton was founded in 1891 by the Heald brothers, who named the town after their father, William Heald. The town was incorporated in 1901 and was the first town in Carter County to have electricity. In the early 1900s, Healdton was a thriving oil town, with a population of over 5,000. The town was home to several oil refineries, and the Healdton Oil Field was one of the largest in the state.

Geography

Healdton is located at 34°14'25" North, 97°14'25" West (34.240278, -97.240278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

Economy

Healdton's economy is largely based on agriculture and oil production. The town is home to several oil refineries, and the Healdton Oil Field is one of the largest in the state. The town also has a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,931 people, 790 households, and 545 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,619.2 people per square mile (624.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 81.2% White, 0.6% African American, 11.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.2% from other races, and 2.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.7% of the population.
There were 790 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.4% were married couples living together, 13.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.8% were non-families. 27.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
