Goldsby Summary
Goldsby is a town located in McClain County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census, an increase of 8.3 percent from 1,704 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Oklahoma City Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Goldsby was founded in 1891 by the Choctaw Nation. The town was named after a Choctaw chief, John Goldsby. The town was originally located in the Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory. In 1895, the town was moved to its current location in the Choctaw Nation.
Goldsby was a stop on the St. Louis and San Francisco Railway, which was built in 1901. The town was incorporated in 1906.
Geography
Goldsby is located at (35.1745, -97.4607). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.
Economy
Goldsby is home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a bank, a post office, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a gas station. The town also has a public library and a community center.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,704 people, 645 households, and 463 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,420.3 people per square mile (548.7/km2). There were 709 housing units at an average density of 590.2 per square mile (228.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 79.17% White, 0.35% African American, 14.90% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.53% from other races, and 4.97% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.71% of the population.
There were 645 households, out of which 36.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 29.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $35,000. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $14,845. About 11.2% of families and 14.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.2% of those under age 18 and 15.2% of those age 65 or over.
