Elk City Summary

Elk City is a city located in Beckham County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 11,693 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Beckham County.

History

Elk City was founded in 1901 when the Choctaw, Oklahoma and Gulf Railroad (later the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad) built a line from Oklahoma City to Amarillo, Texas. The town was named for the abundance of elk in the area. The first post office opened in 1901.
In 1902, the Elk City News began publication. The first school was built in 1903. The first bank opened in 1904. The first telephone service was established in 1905.

Geography

Elk City is located at 35°24'25" North, 99°24'45" West (35.406944, -99.4125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), all land.

Economy

Elk City is the economic hub of western Oklahoma. The city is home to a variety of businesses, including oil and gas production, manufacturing, retail, and services. The city is also home to a number of large employers, including Halliburton, ConocoPhillips, and the Elk City Regional Airport.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 11,693 people, 4,541 households, and 2,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,427.2 people per square mile (550.7/km2). There were 5,093 housing units at an average density of 619.7 per square mile (239.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 81.2% White, 2.2% African American, 1.2% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 11.7% from other races, and 3.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 20.2% of the population.
There were 4,541 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,945, and the median income for a family was $37,813. Males had a median income of $30,945 versus $20,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,945. About 13.2% of families and 16.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.2% of those under age 18 and 11.2% of those age 65 or over.
