Altus Summary

Altus, Oklahoma is a city located in Jackson County, Oklahoma. It is the county seat of Jackson County and is the largest city in the county. The city is located in the southwestern part of the state, approximately 100 miles southwest of Oklahoma City. The population of Altus was 19,813 at the 2010 census, an increase of 7.7% since 2000.

History

The area that is now Altus was first settled in 1891 by the Choctaw Nation. The town was originally named Frazer, after the Choctaw chief, Frazer Colbert. In 1897, the town was renamed Altus, which is Latin for “high” or “elevated”. The town was officially incorporated in 1901.
In the early 1900s, Altus was a major stop on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. The railroad brought many new settlers to the area, and the population of Altus grew rapidly. By 1910, the population had grown to 1,845.
In the 1920s, Altus became a major center for cotton production. The town was also home to several oil refineries, which provided jobs for many of the town’s residents.
During World War II, Altus was home to an Army Air Corps base, which was used to train pilots. After the war, the base was converted into an Air Force base, and it remains in operation today.
