Verdi Summary

Verdi is a small town located in Washoe County, Nevada, United States. It is situated along the Truckee River, just west of Reno. The population was 2,403 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Verdi is located at 39°31′17″N 119°59′17″W (39.5214, -119.9879). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

History

Verdi was founded in 1868 by a group of settlers from the Midwest. The town was named after the Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi. The town was originally a stop on the Central Pacific Railroad, and it served as a supply center for the nearby mining towns.
In the early 1900s, Verdi was a popular destination for tourists, who came to enjoy the area's natural beauty and outdoor activities. The town was also home to a number of saloons and gambling halls.
In the 1950s, Verdi began to experience a decline in population as the nearby mining towns closed down. The town was revitalized in the 1970s when the nearby Reno-Tahoe International Airport was built. The airport brought new jobs and businesses to the area, and Verdi began to experience a resurgence.

Economy

Verdi's economy is largely based on tourism and services. The town is home to a number of hotels, restaurants, and other businesses that cater to tourists. The nearby Reno-Tahoe International Airport also provides jobs and economic activity to the area.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 2,403 people, 945 households, and 645 families residing in the town. The population density was 3,521.3 people per square mile (1,364.2/km2). There were 1,039 housing units at an average density of 1,521.3 per square mile (586.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 91.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.2% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 10.2% of the population.
There were 945 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.2 males.
