Versailles Summary

Versailles is a small town located in Ripley County, Indiana, United States. It is situated in the southeastern part of the state, approximately 40 miles west of Cincinnati, Ohio. The population of Versailles was 1,811 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Versailles was first settled in 1817 by a group of settlers from North Carolina. The town was originally known as “Newberry”, but was later renamed “Versailles” in 1837 after the French city of the same name. The town was officially incorporated in 1845.
In the late 19th century, Versailles was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several mills, including a flour mill, a saw mill, and a woolen mill. The town also had a large number of stores, including a general store, a drug store, and a hardware store.

Geography

Versailles is located at 39°14′N 85°7′W (39.23, -85.12). According to the 2010 census, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.2 km2), all land.
