Vernon Summary

Vernon is a small town located in Jennings County, Indiana, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Muscatatuck River, approximately 20 miles south of North Vernon. The population of Vernon was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Vernon was founded in 1837 by William and Mary Vernon, who had moved to the area from Kentucky. The town was originally known as Vernonville, but the name was changed to Vernon in 1845. The town was incorporated in 1867.
Vernon was a major stop on the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad, which ran through the town from 1853 to 1871. The railroad brought many new settlers to the area, and the town grew rapidly. By the late 19th century, Vernon had become a thriving agricultural center, with several mills, a foundry, and a variety of other businesses.

Geography

Vernon is located at 38°45'25"N 85°37'45"W (38.756944, -85.629167). According to the 2010 census, the town has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all land.

Economy

Vernon's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, as well as a variety of small businesses. The town also has a few manufacturing plants, including a plastics factory and a furniture factory.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,039.4 people per square mile (788.3/km2). There were 817 housing units at an average density of 899.4 per square mile (347.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.9% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $37,500. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $15,945. About 11.2% of families and 14.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.2% of those under age 18 and 11.2% of those age 65 or over.
