Tell City Summary
Tell City is a city located in Perry County, Indiana, United States. It is situated along the Ohio River, approximately 50 miles east of Evansville. The population was 7,272 at the 2010 census.
History
Tell City was founded in 1858 by Swiss immigrants who named the city after Swiss folk hero William Tell. The city was incorporated in 1871. The city was a major center for the production of furniture in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The city was also home to the Tell City Chair Company, which was founded in 1867 and was the largest employer in the city until it closed in 2004.

Tell City is located at 38°30′N 86°41′W (38.50, -86.68). According to the 2010 census, the city has a total area of 4.3 square miles (11.2 km2), of which 4.2 square miles (10.9 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.
Economy
The economy of Tell City is largely based on manufacturing and tourism. The city is home to several manufacturing companies, including Tell City Chair Company, Tell City Industries, and Tell City Tool & Die. The city also has a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses.

There were 3,072 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
