Seymour Summary

Seymour, Indiana is a city located in Jackson County, Indiana, United States. It is the county seat of Jackson County and is located about 50 miles south of Indianapolis. The population was 17,503 at the 2010 census.

History

Seymour was founded in 1852 by John Seymour, a settler from Ohio. The city was named after him. The first post office was established in 1854. The city was incorporated in 1864.
In the late 19th century, Seymour was a major railroad hub, with several railroads passing through the city. The city was also home to several manufacturing companies, including the Seymour Manufacturing Company, which produced agricultural equipment.

Geography

Seymour is located at 38°59′N 85°51′W (38.983, -85.851). According to the 2010 census, the city has a total area of 8.9 square miles (23.1 km2), of which 8.8 square miles (22.8 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.

Economy

Seymour is home to several major employers, including Cummins, Inc., a global power leader in diesel and natural gas engines and related technologies; Jackson County Hospital, a full-service hospital; and Seymour Community Schools, a public school system.
The city is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 17,503 people, 6,945 households, and 4,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,988.3 people per square mile (766.3/km2). There were 7,541 housing units at an average density of 851.3 per square mile (328.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.7% of the population.
There were 6,945 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.3% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,945, and the median income for a family was $50,945. Males had a median income of $37,945 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,945. About 6.7% of families and 8.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.7% of those under age 18 and 8.7% of those age 65 or over.
