History

Sellersburg was founded in 1851 by William Sellers, a local farmer. The town was originally known as Sellersburg Station, as it was located on the Louisville, New Albany and Chicago Railroad. The town was incorporated in 1867.
In the late 19th century, Sellersburg was a major stop on the Louisville, New Albany and Chicago Railroad. The railroad brought many new businesses to the town, including a flour mill, a sawmill, a brickyard, and a furniture factory.

Geography

Sellersburg is located at 38°22′45″N 85°45′45″W (38.379167, -85.762500). According to the 2010 census, Sellersburg has a total area of 2.14 square miles (5.54 km2), all land.

Economy

Sellersburg is home to several businesses, including a variety of retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The town is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a plastics manufacturer, a metal fabricator, and a printing company.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 5,265 people, 2,093 households, and 1,395 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,456.2 people per square mile (948.7/km2). There were 2,309 housing units at an average density of 1,077.2 per square mile (416.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 94.2% White, 1.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 2,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.3 males.
