Salem, Indiana is a city located in Washington County, Indiana, United States. It is the county seat of Washington County and is located in the southeastern part of the state. The population was 6,319 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Salem was first settled in 1814 by a group of Quakers from North Carolina. The town was originally called New Salem, but the name was changed to Salem in 1819. The town was officially incorporated in 1851.
In the late 19th century, Salem was a major center for the production of furniture. The city was home to several furniture factories, including the Salem Furniture Company, which was founded in 1876. The company was one of the largest furniture manufacturers in the United States at the time.

Salem is located at 38°37′N 86°07′W (38.619, -86.118). According to the 2010 census, the city has a total area of 4.3 square miles (11.2 km2), all land.

The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 2,541 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 13.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.3 males.

The per capita income for the city was $17,944.
