Patoka Summary

Patoka, Indiana is a small town located in Gibson County, Indiana. It is situated on the banks of the Patoka River, which is a tributary of the Wabash River. The town was founded in 1817 and is the county seat of Gibson County. The population of Patoka was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Patoka was founded in 1817 by William and Mary Patoka, who were among the first settlers in the area. The town was named after the Patoka River, which was named after the Patoka Indians, who were the original inhabitants of the area. The Patoka Indians were a part of the Miami tribe, and they lived in the area until the early 19th century.
The town was originally a trading post for the local farmers and settlers. In 1818, the first post office was established in Patoka. The town was incorporated in 1837 and the first courthouse was built in 1838.
In the late 19th century, Patoka was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several mills, including a flour mill, a sawmill, and a gristmill. The town also had a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a hotel.

Geography

Patoka is located in the southwestern part of Gibson County, Indiana. It is situated on the banks of the Patoka River, which is a tributary of the Wabash River. The town is located approximately 30 miles south of Evansville, Indiana and approximately 50 miles north of Louisville, Kentucky.
The town has a total area of 0.7 square miles, all of which is land. The terrain is mostly flat, with some rolling hills. The climate is humid subtropical, with hot summers and mild winters.
