Osceola Summary

Osceola is a small town located in St. Joseph County, Indiana, United States. It is situated on the banks of the St. Joseph River, about 10 miles east of South Bend. The population was 2,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Osceola was founded in 1832 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after the Seminole leader Osceola, who had died in 1838. The town was incorporated in 1851.
Osceola was a major stop on the Michigan Southern Railroad, which connected Chicago to Toledo. The railroad was a major factor in the growth of the town, as it allowed for the transportation of goods and people.

The racial makeup of the town was 94.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.3% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
