Oldenburg Summary

Oldenburg is a small town located in Franklin County, Indiana, United States. It is situated on the banks of the East Fork of the Whitewater River, approximately 40 miles west of Cincinnati, Ohio. The town was founded in 1837 by German immigrants and was named after the city of Oldenburg in Germany. As of the 2010 census, the population of Oldenburg was 1,249.

Geography

Oldenburg is located at 39°25'25"N 85°7'25"W (39.423750, -85.123611). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

History

Oldenburg was founded in 1837 by German immigrants who had come to the area from Pennsylvania. The town was named after the city of Oldenburg in Germany. The town was originally a farming community, but it soon developed into a small industrial center. The first industry in Oldenburg was a sawmill, which was built in 1845. Other industries soon followed, including a grist mill, a woolen mill, a distillery, and a brewery.
In 1851, the first railroad line was built through Oldenburg, connecting it to Cincinnati, Ohio. This allowed the town to become a major shipping center for the surrounding area. The railroad also brought new businesses to the town, including a furniture factory, a canning factory, and a brickyard.
