History
Oaktown was founded in 1837 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after the abundance of oak trees in the area. The first post office was established in 1838 and the first school was built in 1845.
In the late 19th century, Oaktown was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several grain mills, a sawmill, a blacksmith shop, and a general store. The town also had a railroad station, which connected it to the larger cities of Indianapolis and Terre Haute.
In the early 20th century, Oaktown began to decline as the railroad station closed and the population began to move away. The town was nearly abandoned by the 1950s, but in the late 1960s, the town began to experience a revival. The town was revitalized by the construction of a new school and the opening of a new post office.
