Oakland City is a small town located in Gibson County, Indiana, United States. It is situated in the southwestern part of the state, about 40 miles northeast of Evansville. The population was 2,541 at the 2010 census.

History

Oakland City was founded in 1853 by a group of settlers from Oakland City, Tennessee. The town was named after the original settlement in Tennessee. The first post office was established in 1854. The town was incorporated in 1871.
Oakland City was a major stop on the Evansville and Terre Haute Railroad, which was built in 1871. The railroad brought many new businesses to the town, including a flour mill, a sawmill, a brickyard, and a furniture factory. The town also had a number of stores, hotels, and saloons.
