Oakland City Summary
Oakland City is a small town located in Gibson County, Indiana, United States. It is situated in the southwestern part of the state, about 40 miles northeast of Evansville. The population was 2,541 at the 2010 census.
History
Oakland City was founded in 1853 by a group of settlers from Oakland City, Tennessee. The town was named after the original settlement in Tennessee. The first post office was established in 1854. The town was incorporated in 1871.
Oakland City was a major stop on the Evansville and Terre Haute Railroad, which was built in 1871. The railroad brought many new businesses to the town, including a flour mill, a sawmill, a brickyard, and a furniture factory. The town also had a number of stores, hotels, and saloons.
In the late 19th century, Oakland City was a popular tourist destination. The town was known for its mineral springs, which were believed to have healing properties. The springs were a popular attraction for visitors from all over the country.

Oakland City is located at 38°25'25" North, 87°37'17" West (38.423, -87.621). According to the 2010 census, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

As of the 2010 census, there were 2,541 people, 1,039 households, and 690 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,093.3 people per square mile (808.3/km2). There were 1,097 housing units at an average density of 897.5 per square mile (346.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 1,039 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $32,917, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,938 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the town was $17,845. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
