Mishawaka, Indiana is a city located in St. Joseph County, Indiana, United States. The city is situated on the St. Joseph River, approximately 12 miles east of South Bend and 25 miles west of Elkhart. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 48,252, making it the fourth largest city in Indiana.
History
Mishawaka was founded in 1833 by a group of settlers from New England. The city was named after the nearby Native American village of Mishawaka, which was located on the banks of the St. Joseph River. The city was incorporated in 1865 and has since grown to become a major industrial center in the region.
Geography
Mishawaka is located at 41°41'N 86°7'W (41.68, -86.12). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.2 square miles (41.8 km2), of which 15.9 square miles (41.2 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2) is water.
Economy
Mishawaka is a major industrial center in the region, with a variety of manufacturing and service industries. The city is home to several large employers, including AM General, Honeywell, and Uniroyal. The city also has a thriving retail sector, with several large shopping malls and retail centers.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 48,252 people, 19,845 households, and 12,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,030.3 people per square mile (1,171.2/km2). There were 21,541 housing units at an average density of 1,346.2 per square mile (519.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 11.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 5.2% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.3% of the population.
There were 19,845 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 14.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,919, and the median income for a family was $51,890. Males had a median income of $38,945 versus $26,945 for females.
