History

Merom was founded in 1817 by a group of settlers from North Carolina. The town was named after Merom Creek, which was named after a biblical city. The town was incorporated in 1837.
Merom was a major stop on the Wabash and Erie Canal, which was built in the early 19th century. The canal was used to transport goods from the Ohio River to the Great Lakes.
The town was also a major stop on the Vandalia Railroad, which was built in the late 19th century. The railroad was used to transport coal from the coal mines in the area to the larger cities in the Midwest.

The economy of Merom is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, which produce corn, soybeans, and wheat.
The town is also home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the town. The population density was 890.0 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 376.7 per square mile (145.3/km2). There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 25.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older.
