History
Merom was founded in 1817 by a group of settlers from North Carolina. The town was named after Merom Creek, which was named after a biblical city. The town was incorporated in 1837.
Merom was a major stop on the Wabash and Erie Canal, which was built in the early 19th century. The canal was used to transport goods from the Ohio River to the Great Lakes.
The town was also a major stop on the Vandalia Railroad, which was built in the late 19th century. The railroad was used to transport coal from the coal mines in the area to the larger cities in the Midwest.
