Mentone Summary
Mentone is a small town located in Kosciusko County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Warsaw, Indiana Micropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Mentone was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Mentone, Alabama. The town was named after the Alabama town, which in turn was named after the Italian city of Menton. The first post office in Mentone was established in 1856.
Mentone was incorporated as a town in 1871. The town was a major stop on the Wabash and Erie Canal, which ran through the town from 1843 to 1874. The canal was a major transportation route for goods and people in the area.

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,817.5 people per square mile (700.7/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 785.0 per square mile (303.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
