Marengo Summary

Marengo is a small town located in Crawford County, Indiana, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Ohio River, approximately 25 miles south of Louisville, Kentucky. The population of Marengo was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Marengo was founded in 1818 by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The town was named after the Battle of Marengo, which was fought in 1800 during the Napoleonic Wars. The town was originally a trading post and ferry crossing, and it quickly grew into a thriving community.
In 1820, the first post office was established in Marengo. The town was incorporated in 1837, and the first school was built in 1845. The town was a major stop on the Underground Railroad, and it was also a major port for the shipment of tobacco and other goods.
