Lizton Summary

Lizton is a small town located in Hendricks County, Indiana, United States. It is situated approximately 20 miles northwest of Indianapolis. The population of Lizton was 1,092 at the 2010 census.

History

Lizton was founded in 1851 by William and Elizabeth (Liz) Smith. The town was named after Elizabeth, and the post office was established in 1852. The town was originally a farming community, but it has since become a bedroom community for Indianapolis.

Geography

Lizton is located at 39°53'45" North, 86°31'45" West (39.895833, -86.529167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Lizton is primarily a bedroom community for Indianapolis, with many of its residents commuting to the city for work. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,092 people, 431 households, and 309 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,817.3 people per square mile (700.7/km2). There were 463 housing units at an average density of 771.7 per square mile (297.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.7% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 431 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
