Lanesville Summary

Lanesville is a small town located in Harrison County, Indiana, United States. It is situated in the extreme southern part of the state, near the Ohio River. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Lanesville was founded in 1818 by William Lane, a Revolutionary War veteran. He named the town after himself and it was incorporated in 1837. The town was originally a farming community, but it soon became a center for the production of furniture and other wood products. The town was also known for its brickyards, which produced bricks for many of the buildings in the area.
In the late 19th century, the town was a major stop on the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. This allowed the town to become a major shipping center for the surrounding area. The railroad also brought in many new businesses and industries, including a flour mill, a sawmill, and a brickyard.

Geography

Lanesville is located at 38°17'45" North, 85°51'45" West (38.295833, -85.862500). It is situated in the extreme southern part of the state, near the Ohio River. The town is located in the hills of the Knobs region of southern Indiana.
The town has a total area of 0.8 square miles, all of which is land. The terrain is mostly hilly, with some flat areas near the Ohio River.
