History

Huntingburg was founded in 1837 by a group of German immigrants led by John George Rumbach. The city was named after the German city of Huntingburg, which was the hometown of Rumbach. The city was incorporated in 1866.

Geography

Huntingburg is located at 38°17'25" North, 86°59'17" West (38.290278, -86.988056). According to the 2010 census, the city has a total area of 2.45 square miles (6.33 km2), all land.

Economy

Huntingburg is home to several businesses, including a furniture manufacturer, a plastics manufacturer, a printing company, and a trucking company. The city is also home to a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 4,457 people, 1,845 households, and 1,179 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,822.2 people per square mile (704.3/km2). There were 1,976 housing units at an average density of 807.3 per square mile (312.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.4% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 1,845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.2 males.
