Dugger Summary

Dugger is a small town located in Sullivan County, Indiana. It is situated in the western part of the state, about 40 miles from the state capital of Indianapolis. The town has a population of approximately 1,000 people and is part of the Terre Haute Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Dugger was founded in 1837 by William Dugger, a settler from North Carolina. The town was originally known as Dugger’s Station, and was a stop on the Terre Haute and Indianapolis Railroad. The town was officially incorporated in 1871.
In the late 19th century, Dugger was a thriving coal mining town. The coal industry was the main source of employment for the town’s residents. The coal mines were eventually closed in the early 20th century, and the town’s economy shifted to agriculture and small businesses.

Geography

Dugger is located in western Sullivan County, Indiana. It is situated at the intersection of State Road 54 and State Road 159. The town is surrounded by rolling hills and farmland. The Wabash River is located about 10 miles to the east.
