Campbellsburg was founded in 1818 by William Campbell, a Revolutionary War veteran. The town was originally known as Campbell's Station, and was the first settlement in Washington County. The town was later renamed Campbellsburg in 1837.
In the early 19th century, Campbellsburg was a thriving river port, with steamboats regularly stopping at the town's wharf. The town was also a major stop on the Underground Railroad, with many runaway slaves passing through the town on their way to freedom.

Geography

Campbellsburg is located at 38°25'25" North, 85°45'45" West (38.423, -85.7625). The town is situated along the Ohio River, approximately 25 miles northwest of Louisville, Kentucky.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,543.6 people per square mile (595.7/km2). There were 486 housing units at an average density of 690.0 per square mile (266.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
