History

Boonville was founded in 1818 by William Boon, a Revolutionary War veteran. The town was named after him and was incorporated in 1851. Boonville was a major port on the Ohio River and was a major stop on the Underground Railroad. During the Civil War, Boonville was a major supply center for the Union Army.

Boonville is located at 38°5′17″N 87°25′17″W (38.087900, -87.421400). According to the 2010 census, Boonville has a total area of 4.3 square miles (11.2 km2), of which 4.2 square miles (10.9 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.

Economy

Boonville’s economy is largely based on manufacturing and agriculture. The city is home to several manufacturing plants, including a steel mill, a paper mill, and a plastics plant. The city also has a large agricultural sector, with corn, soybeans, and wheat being the main crops.
