History

Bedford was founded in 1825 by William Marshall, a settler from North Carolina. He named the town after his hometown of Bedford, North Carolina. The town was incorporated in 1864.
In the late 19th century, Bedford was a major center for the limestone industry. The city was home to several quarries, and the limestone was used to build many of the buildings in the city, including the courthouse.
