Holly Hill Summary

Holly Hill is a city located in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The population was 11,659 at the 2010 census. Holly Hill is part of the Daytona Beach metropolitan area, which was home to 590,289 people in 2010.

History

Holly Hill was founded in 1894 by a group of settlers from South Carolina. The city was named after the holly trees that grew in the area. The city was incorporated in 1901 and was the first city in Volusia County to have electricity.
In the early 1900s, Holly Hill was a popular tourist destination. The city was home to several hotels, including the Holly Hill Hotel, which was built in 1902 and was the largest hotel in the area. The hotel was destroyed by a fire in 1925.
In the 1920s, the city was home to a number of businesses, including a cannery, a bottling plant, a cigar factory, and a sawmill. The city also had a number of citrus groves and was home to a number of citrus packing houses.
In the 1950s, the city began to decline as the tourist industry shifted to Daytona Beach. The city was also affected by the construction of Interstate 95, which bypassed the city.

Geography

Holly Hill is located at 29°12'N 81°3'W (29.20, -81.05). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), of which 4.1 square miles (10.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (2.17%) is water.

Economy

Holly Hill is home to a number of businesses, including a number of retail stores, restaurants, and hotels. The city is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a plastics manufacturer and a metal fabrication company.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 11,659 people, 4,845 households, and 2,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,845.3 people per square mile (1,098.7/km2). There were 5,541 housing units at an average density of 1,346.3 per square mile (519.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 14.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.7% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.3% of the population.
There were 4,845 households, out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.2% were married couples living together, 15.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,945, and the median income for a family was $37,917. Males had a median income of $30,945 versus $22,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845. About 13.2% of families and 16.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 24.2% of those under age 18 and 8.7% of those age 65 or over.
