Cross City is a small town located in Dixie County, Florida, United States. It is the county seat of Dixie County and is located on the Suwannee River. The population of Cross City was 1,731 at the 2010 census.
History
Cross City was founded in 1891 by the Suwannee and San Pedro Railroad. The town was named for the railroad crossing of the Suwannee River and San Pedro Creek. The town was incorporated in 1925.
In the early 1900s, Cross City was a major center for the turpentine and lumber industries. The town was also home to a large phosphate mining operation.
Geography
Cross City is located at 29°41'N 83°6'W (29.6833, -83.1000). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.
Economy
Cross City's economy is largely based on agriculture and timber. The town is home to several farms and timber companies. The town is also home to a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,731 people, 690 households, and 441 families residing in the town. The population density was 786.4 people per square mile (303.7/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 365.9 per square mile (141.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 79.2% White, 15.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.3% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.5% were married couples living together, 16.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.8% were non-families. 30.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $25,938, and the median income for a family was $30,938. Males had a median income of $25,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $13,938.
