Cedar Key Summary

Cedar Key is a small city located in Levy County, Florida, United States. It is situated on the Gulf of Mexico, about 40 miles southwest of Gainesville. The city is known for its historic downtown, its seafood industry, and its beautiful beaches.

History

Cedar Key was first settled in the early 1840s by settlers from the nearby Suwannee River. The town was originally called “Cedar Keys”, but the name was later changed to Cedar Key. The town was incorporated in 1859 and was a major port for the shipment of cotton, lumber, and seafood. During the Civil War, the town was occupied by Union forces and was the site of the Battle of Cedar Key in 1862. After the war, the town’s economy shifted to fishing and tourism.

Geography

Cedar Key is located on the Gulf of Mexico, about 40 miles southwest of Gainesville. The city is situated on a series of small islands, connected by bridges and causeways. The city is surrounded by salt marshes and mangrove swamps. The climate is subtropical, with hot, humid summers and mild winters.
