Branford Summary

Branford is a small town located in Suwannee County, Florida. It is situated on the banks of the Suwannee River, about 25 miles west of Gainesville. The town has a population of 1,845 people, according to the 2010 census.

History

Branford was founded in 1858 by a group of settlers from Georgia. The town was named after a local creek, which was named after a local Indian chief. The town was incorporated in 1887 and was the county seat of Suwannee County until the county seat was moved to Live Oak in 1891.
The town was a major center for the lumber industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The town was also home to a large phosphate mining operation, which was the largest in the state. The phosphate industry declined in the mid-20th century, and the town's economy shifted to agriculture and tourism.
