Astatula Summary

Astatula is a small town located in Lake County, Florida, United States. It is situated on the northern shore of Lake Apopka, about 25 miles northwest of Orlando. The population was 1,717 at the 2010 census.

History

Astatula was founded in 1883 by a group of settlers from Georgia. The town was named after the nearby Astatula post office, which was named after the Seminole Indian word for “place of many trees.” The town was incorporated in 1925.

Geography

Astatula is located at 28°41'25" North, 81°45'17" West (28.690278, -81.754722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

Economy

Astatula’s economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several farms, including citrus, vegetable, and cattle farms. The town also has a few small businesses, including a gas station, a convenience store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,717 people, 645 households, and 463 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,420.3 people per square mile (548.7/km2). There were 690 housing units at an average density of 567.2 per square mile (219.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 87.45% White, 8.45% African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 1.76% from other races, and 1.54% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.45% of the population.
There were 645 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.3% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.3% were non-families. 22.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $40,000. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $15,000.
