La Junta Summary

History

The area around La Junta has been inhabited for thousands of years. The first known inhabitants were the Apache, who lived in the area until the late 19th century. The first Europeans to settle in the area were Spanish explorers in the late 18th century. The area was part of the Spanish Empire until 1821, when Mexico gained independence. The area was then part of the Mexican state of Chihuahua until 1848, when it became part of the United States after the Mexican-American War.
The town of La Junta was founded in 1875 by a group of settlers from New Mexico. The town was named after the Spanish word for "meeting," as it was the site of a meeting between the settlers and the local Native American tribes. The town quickly grew and by 1880 had a population of over 1,000.

La Junta is located in southeastern Colorado, near the Arkansas River and the Kansas border. The city is situated at the intersection of U.S. Route 50 and U.S. Route 350. The racial makeup of the city was 75.2% White, 0.9% African American, 1.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 19.2% from other races, and 3.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 41.2% of the population.
There were 2,845 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 15.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.9% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
