Tillmans Corner Summary
Tillmans Corner is an unincorporated community in Mobile County, Alabama, United States. It is located along the Mobile Bay, just south of Mobile. The community is part of the Mobile metropolitan statistical area.
History
Tillmans Corner was originally known as "Tillman's Corner" and was named after the Tillman family, who were among the first settlers in the area. The Tillman family owned a large tract of land in the area, and the corner of the property was the site of the original settlement. The area was first settled in the early 1800s, and the first post office was established in 1845.
The area was primarily rural until the 1950s, when the population began to grow rapidly. The area was annexed by the City of Mobile in 1960, and the population continued to grow. By the 2000 census, the population had reached over 20,000.
Geography
Tillmans Corner is located at 30°37'25" North, 88°7'25" West (30.623750, -88.123611). It is situated along the Mobile Bay, just south of Mobile. The community is part of the Mobile metropolitan statistical area.
The area is mostly flat, with some low hills in the northern part of the community. The soil is mostly sandy, with some clay in the northern part of the community.
Economy
Tillmans Corner is primarily a residential community, with most of the population employed in the service sector. The area is home to several large retail stores, including Walmart, Target, and Home Depot. There are also several restaurants and other businesses in the area.
The area is also home to several industrial parks, including the Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley, which is home to several aerospace and defense companies. The area is also home to several shipyards, including Austal USA and BAE Systems.

As of the 2000 census, there were 20,845 people, 7,845 households, and 5,717 families residing in the community. The population density was 1,845.3 people per square mile (711.7/km2). There were 8,845 housing units at an average density of 776.3 per square mile (299.7/km2). The racial makeup of the community was 68.2% White, 28.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 7,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the community, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
