Steele Summary

Steele is a small town located in St. Clair County, Alabama. It is situated in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, approximately 20 miles northeast of Birmingham. The town has a population of 1,845 people, according to the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Steele was first settled in the early 1800s by settlers from North Carolina and Virginia. The town was originally known as "Mountain Springs" and was later renamed "Steele" in honor of a local family. The town was officially incorporated in 1887.
In the late 1800s, Steele was a thriving agricultural community. Cotton was the main crop grown in the area, and the town was home to several cotton gins. The town also had a sawmill, a gristmill, and a blacksmith shop.
In the early 1900s, the town began to experience a decline in population as many of its residents moved away in search of better economic opportunities. The Great Depression of the 1930s further exacerbated the town's economic woes.

Geography

Steele is located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, approximately 20 miles northeast of Birmingham. The town is situated at an elevation of 890 feet above sea level. The town is located in the Coosa River Valley and is surrounded by rolling hills and forests.
The climate in Steele is humid subtropical, with hot, humid summers and mild winters. The average annual temperature is 64°F, and the average annual precipitation is 52 inches.
