Sipsey Summary
Sipsey is a small unincorporated community located in Walker County, Alabama. It is situated along the Sipsey River, which is a tributary of the Black Warrior River. The community is located approximately 10 miles south of Jasper, the county seat. The population of Sipsey was estimated to be around 500 in 2020.
History
Sipsey was first settled in the early 1800s by settlers from North Carolina and Virginia. The community was named after the Sipsey River, which was named after the Sipsey Indians, a Native American tribe that once lived in the area. The first post office in Sipsey was established in 1837.
In the late 1800s, the town was a major center for the timber industry. The Sipsey Lumber Company was established in 1891 and operated until the early 1900s. The company was responsible for the construction of several sawmills in the area.
In the early 1900s, the town began to decline as the timber industry moved away. The population of Sipsey decreased significantly during this time.
