History

Oneonta was founded in 1868 by the Blount County Land Company. The city was named after Oneonta, New York, the hometown of one of the company's founders. The city was incorporated in 1891 and was the county seat of Blount County until the county seat was moved to nearby Blountsville in 1902.
Oneonta was a major center of the coal mining industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The city was also home to several cotton mills and other industries. The city's economy declined in the mid-20th century as the coal industry declined and the cotton mills closed.

Oneonta is located at 33°56'N 86°27'W. The city is situated in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and is part of the Appalachian Plateau. The city is located in the Appalachian Valley and is surrounded by mountains on all sides. The city is located at an elevation of 845 feet above sea level.
The city is located in Blount County, Alabama and is part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city is located approximately 30 miles northeast of Birmingham and approximately 40 miles southwest of Huntsville.
