Northport Summary

Northport, Alabama is a city located in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, United States. It is located on the Black Warrior River, just north of the city of Tuscaloosa. The population was 23,330 at the 2010 census. Northport is part of the Tuscaloosa Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Northport was founded in 1833 by William L. Brandon, a planter from South Carolina. The city was named after Northport, New York, the hometown of Brandon's wife. The city was incorporated in 1871.

Geography

Northport is located at 33°14'45.3"N 87°34'2.2"W (33.245950, -87.567278). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.2 square miles (41.8 km2), of which 16.1 square miles (41.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (0.62%) is water.

Economy

Northport's economy is largely based on the University of Alabama, which is located in nearby Tuscaloosa. The city is also home to several manufacturing and industrial companies, including Mercedes-Benz U.S. International, which produces luxury vehicles. Other major employers in the area include the Northport Medical Center, the Tuscaloosa County School System, and the City of Northport.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 23,330 people, 8,945 households, and 5,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,444.2 people per square mile (556.7/km2). There were 9,945 housing units at an average density of 615.7 per square mile (237.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 28.3% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 8,945 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.9% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,841, and the median income for a family was $45,859. Males had a median income of $35,945 versus $26,851 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,845. About 11.2% of families and 14.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.2% of those under age 18 and 11.2% of those age 65 or over.
