History

Moody was founded in the late 19th century as a railroad town. It was named after the railroad's chief engineer, William H. Moody. The town was incorporated in 1910.

Geography

Moody is located at 33°32'45.8"N 86°25'45.2"W (33.545944, -86.429222). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), all land.

Economy

Moody's economy is largely based on manufacturing and retail. The city is home to several large manufacturing plants, including a Honda plant and a Caterpillar plant. The city also has a number of retail stores, including a Walmart Supercenter and a Lowe's Home Improvement store.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 11,717 people, 4,541 households, and 3,092 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,433.2 people per square mile (553.3/km2). There were 4,945 housing units at an average density of 602.2 per square mile (232.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 15.3% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 4,541 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% were non-families. 26.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.9% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.3 males.
