History
Luverne was founded in 1887 by the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. The city was named after the daughter of a railroad official. The city was incorporated in 1891.

The economy of Luverne is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several manufacturing plants, including a paper mill, a furniture factory, and a poultry processing plant. The city also has a number of retail stores and restaurants.

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,945 people, 1,179 households, and 790 families residing in the city. The population density was 703.2 people per square mile (271.7/km2). There were 1,310 housing units at an average density of 312.2 per square mile (120.4/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 57.45% White, 40.90% Black or African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.48% from other races, and 0.81% from two or more races. 1.14% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 1,179 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 19.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 83.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 77.2 males.
