History

Luverne was founded in 1887 by the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. The city was named after the daughter of a railroad official. The city was incorporated in 1891.

The racial makeup of the city was 57.45% White, 40.90% Black or African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.48% from other races, and 0.81% from two or more races. 1.14% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 1,179 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 19.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.04.
