Jasper Summary

Jasper, Alabama is a city located in Walker County, Alabama, United States. It is the county seat of Walker County and is located in the northwest corner of the state. The city is situated on the banks of the Black Warrior River and is part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Jasper was 14,352.

History

Jasper was founded in 1815 by settlers from Georgia and Tennessee. The city was named after William Jasper, a Revolutionary War hero from South Carolina. The city was incorporated in 1821 and was the county seat of Walker County.
In the early 19th century, Jasper was a major trading center for cotton and other agricultural products. The city was also a major stop on the stagecoach route between Nashville and New Orleans.
During the Civil War, Jasper was the site of several skirmishes between Union and Confederate forces. The city was occupied by Union forces in 1863 and remained under Union control until the end of the war.

Geography

Jasper is located at 33°50'N 87°17'W (33.829, -87.283). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29.0 km2), of which 11.1 square miles (28.7 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.

Economy

Jasper is a major industrial center in the region. The city is home to several manufacturing plants, including a steel mill, a paper mill, and a chemical plant. The city is also home to several retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses.
The city is also home to several educational institutions, including the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Bevill State Community College, and Walker Technical College.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 14,352 people, 5,845 households, and 3,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,293.2 people per square mile (499.7/km2). There were 6,521 housing units at an average density of 584.2 per square mile (225.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 28.3% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 5,845 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% were married couples living together, 19.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.99.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,945, and the median income for a family was $37,945. Males had a median income of $31,945 versus $21,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,945.
