History

The area that is now Hamilton was first settled in the early 1800s by settlers from Georgia and Tennessee. The town was originally known as Hamilton Depot, named after the railroad station that was built in the area in 1854. The town was incorporated in 1872 and was named after James Hamilton, a prominent local landowner.
In the late 1800s, Hamilton was a thriving agricultural center, with cotton, corn, and other crops being grown in the area. The town also had a number of businesses, including a sawmill, gristmill, and a cotton gin.
