History
The area that is now Hamilton was first settled in the early 1800s by settlers from Georgia and Tennessee. The town was originally known as Hamilton Depot, named after the railroad station that was built in the area in 1854. The town was incorporated in 1872 and was named after James Hamilton, a prominent local landowner.
In the late 1800s, Hamilton was a thriving agricultural center, with cotton, corn, and other crops being grown in the area. The town also had a number of businesses, including a sawmill, gristmill, and a cotton gin.

As of the 2010 census, there were 6,819 people, 2,717 households, and 1,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 830.3 people per square mile (320.3/km2). There were 3,068 housing units at an average density of 373.3 per square mile (144.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 73.2% White, 24.2% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. 1.7% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 2,717 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 17.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% were non-families. 29.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $27,813, and the median income for a family was $35,938. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $20,972 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,845. About 16.2% of families and 19.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 25.2% of those under age 18 and 17.2% of those age 65 or over.
