Grayson Valley is a census-designated place (CDP) in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. It is located in the northeastern corner of the county, just south of Birmingham. The population was 4,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Grayson Valley was first settled in the early 1800s by the Grayson family, who were among the first settlers in the area. The area was originally known as Grayson's Valley, and the name was eventually shortened to Grayson Valley.
The area was largely rural until the 1950s, when the population began to grow rapidly due to the growth of Birmingham and the surrounding suburbs. The area was annexed by Birmingham in the 1960s, and the population continued to grow.

Economy

Grayson Valley is primarily a residential area, with most of its residents commuting to Birmingham for work. The area is home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 4,845 people, 1,945 households, and 1,346 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,154.3 people per square mile (446.7/km2). There were 2,072 housing units at an average density of 493.3 per square mile (190.3/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 87.45% White, 9.45% Black or African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.83% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.83% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. 1.90% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 1,945 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $41,944, and the median income for a family was $50,938. Males had a median income of $37,917 versus $27,917 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $20,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
