Georgiana Summary

Georgiana, Alabama is a small town located in Butler County, Alabama. It is situated on the banks of the Pea River, and is the county seat of Butler County. The town was founded in 1819 and named after George Washington. The population of Georgiana was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Georgiana is located at 31°45'25" North, 86°45'25" West (31.756944, -86.756944). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.

Economy

The economy of Georgiana is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several large farms, including the Butler County Farm, which is one of the largest in the state. The town also has a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the town. The population density was 837.5 people per square mile (323.7/km2). There were 845 housing units at an average density of 382.7 per square mile (147.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 68.2% White, 29.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% were married couples living together, 19.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.04.
