Columbia Summary

Columbia is a small town located in the southeastern corner of Alabama, in Houston County. It is situated on the banks of the Choctawhatchee River, and is part of the Dothan metropolitan area. The town has a population of approximately 1,500 people, and is known for its rural charm and friendly atmosphere.

History

Columbia was founded in 1836 by settlers from Georgia and South Carolina. The town was named after Christopher Columbus, and was originally part of Dale County. In 1866, Columbia was incorporated as a town, and in 1872, it became part of Houston County.
During the Civil War, Columbia was a major supply center for the Confederate Army. The town was also the site of a major battle in 1864, when Union forces attempted to capture the town. The Union forces were unsuccessful, and the town remained in Confederate hands.
