Centreville Summary

Centreville is a town located in Bibb County, Alabama, United States. It is the county seat of Bibb County and is located in the west-central part of the state. The population was 2,778 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Centreville is located at 33°11'25" North, 87°7'25" West (33.1903, -87.1237). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.

History

Centreville was founded in 1818 and was named for its location at the center of Bibb County. The town was incorporated in 1821 and was the first county seat of Bibb County. The town was the site of the first courthouse in the county, which was built in 1821.
The town was the site of a major battle during the Civil War, the Battle of Centreville, which took place on April 18, 1865. The battle was a Confederate victory and resulted in the capture of the Union forces.

Economy

The economy of Centreville is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The town is home to several manufacturing plants, including a paper mill, a steel mill, and a textile mill. The town is also home to several agricultural businesses, including a poultry processing plant and a feed mill.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 2,778 people, 1,093 households, and 745 families residing in the town. The population density was 662.2 people per square mile (255.7/km2). There were 1,223 housing units at an average density of 291.3 per square mile (112.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 79.2% White, 17.7% Black or African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. 2.7% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.05.
