Andalusia Summary
Andalusia is a city located in the southeastern corner of the U.S. state of Alabama. It is the county seat of Covington County and is part of the Dothan, Alabama Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Andalusia was 9,015.
History
The area that is now Andalusia was first settled in the early 19th century by settlers from Georgia and the Carolinas. The town was originally known as "New Site" and was later renamed "Andalusia" after the Spanish province of Andalusia. The town was incorporated in 1887 and was designated as the county seat of Covington County in 1897.
In the early 20th century, Andalusia was a major center for the timber industry. The city was also home to several large cotton plantations. During the Great Depression, the city's economy suffered greatly, but it was able to recover in the 1940s and 1950s with the help of the nearby Fort Rucker military base.
Geography
Andalusia is located at 31°17'N 86°20'W (31.2833, -86.3333). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29.0 km2), of which 11.1 square miles (28.7 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.
Economy
Andalusia's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large poultry processing plants, as well as a number of other manufacturing companies. The city is also home to several large retail stores, including Walmart, Lowe's, and Home Depot.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 9,015 people, 3,717 households, and 2,521 families residing in the city. The population density was 814.3 people per square mile (313.9/km2). There were 4,093 housing units at an average density of 368.3 per square mile (142.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 28.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 3,717 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 17.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38.4 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,945, and the median income for a family was $37,917. Males had a median income of $31,945 versus $21,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845. About 16.2% of families and 19.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 14.2% of those age 65 or over.
